Seminar Objectives:

Many facilities require phlebotomist to perform Basic Electrocardiography (EKG) tests that monitor and measure the electrical activity within the heart. Phlebotomists are skilled professionals within the health care arena who have been thoroughly trained to collect, handle, and process blood collection as well as other specimens for laboratory analysis by utilizing micro collection and venipuncture techniques. The seminar is designed to provide a theoretical and hands-on review and cross training opportunity for students to perform multi-tasked duties in phlebotomy and EKG. As a need for health care professionals to be cross trained continues to grow, Smithwood Medical Institute, LLC has created an EKG Seminar. Upon successfully completing this seminar, students will review the role of a phlebotomist and will be given an overview of the curriculum for basic EKG training.

Admission Prerequisite: 

The seminar will serve as a continuing education requirement for certified phlebotomists. Candidates must be phlebotomists verified by submission of their license or certificate of completion of a phlebotomy training course.

Admission Requirements for Seminar:

To be accepted into the seminar, applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

a.) Complete a personal interview with school representative

b.) After satisfying all enrollment requirements applicants will complete all necessary paperwork including the enrollment agreement and all financial assistance (if necessary) documents.

c.) Proof of certificate of completion from an approved phlebotomy training program and/or proper documentation/license from a certification agency stating that the applicant is a phlebotomist.

Class Schedule:

The seminar will be provided in a 3 week session from Monday- Friday from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

There must be seven persons registered for the seminar to be held.  If the seminar will not be held due lack of registrants, those already registered will be contacted to attend on another date or to receive a refund.

Total Number of Hours: 60 Hours

Main Skills to be Learned:

This seminar is intended to assist phlebotomist with being crossed trained in EKG as well as remaining current with their knowledge and skills, therefore will cover the following topics:

6 Hours: Review the role of a Phlebotomist

6 Hours: Review venipuncture procedure

6 Hours: Coronary Anatomy & Physiology

6 Hours: Basic Electrophysiology

6 Hours: Lead Morphology and Placement & Intro to 12-Lead EKG

6 Hours: Technical Aspects of EKG & Calculating Heart Rate

6 Hours: Sinus/Atria/Junctional/Ventricular Rhythms & AV Blocks

6 Hours: Myocardinal Infarction & Pace makers

6 Hours: Cardiac medications & Electrical Therapy

6 Hours: Diagnostic Electrocardiography


Upon successful completion of the seminar, participants will receive a certificate of completion.
